NewsWise for ages 7-9

NewsWise for ages 9-11
Access all the web versions of our lesson plans for 9- to 11-year olds.

Pupils continue their progress through Journalist Training School as they complete the unit, culminating in them producing their own written news report at the end of the project.

The units of work build on each other, but pupils do not need to have completed the lessons for 7- to 9-year-olds to do the lessons for 9- to 11-year-olds; they can start their journey here.
NewsWise values poster
The NewsWise values act as a reference point throughout the project and define what we believe news should aim to be.

These values are designed to enable pupils to judge the trustworthiness of information as well as to produce powerful stories themselves.
  • Truthful - reporting accurately and factually

  • Fair - treating everyone equally and with respect

  • Balanced - representing all sides of the story

  • Interesting - engaging the reader

  • NewsWise Navigator
The NewsWise navigator is designed to help children check if they can trust what they are reading.

Download to display in the classroom and give to your pupils to use as they develop their news literacy skills.
  • Stop before you trust, share or react

  • Question the source of the information

  • Check the coverage - who else is reporting it?

  • Decide if it's trustworthy or not

  • Bring the learning to life
