How to donate

How can I make a donation online?

It's quick and easy to donate online through the CAF donation platform. You can make a one-off donation or become a regular donor here.

Can I send a cheque in the post?

Cheques should be made payable to The Guardian Foundation and sent to us at:

FAO The Guardian Foundation

The Guardian News and Media

Kings Place, 90 York Way

London

N1 9GU

We do not accept cash through the post.

Can I leave a gift in my will?

Yes. We’re delighted to receive donations left to us as legacies. Please get in touch by emailing info@theguardianfoundation.org to let us know if you plan on leaving a gift in your will.

Do you accept support from businesses?

Absolutely. Please click here to find out about our corporate partner packages.

Do you accept support from grantmakers?

Yes, find out more about this here. We have previously worked with a range of organisations, connecting their interests with our programme objectives. We wouldn’t have reached as many people without their support.

Partnerships

Will you consider partnership requests from registered organisations?

Absolutely. We appreciate receiving opportunities to join projects and/or funding applications, where we can have a meaningful role and partners clearly complement each other’s experience. This must be clear. We receive many requests that confuse working with us as establishing a partnership with the Guardian News and Media Group (it’s not). Even though we’re proud to carry the Guardian name, this shouldn’t be the only reason you would like to work with us.

Do you award grants?

We do some grantmaking, but it is specifically based on funding agreements with donors. Our focus is on delivering impactful programmes and we may work with partners to enhance our delivery. We do not accept speculative grant applications and we do not have funds available for this type of enquiry. We are open to partnership requests.

Charity information

Where can I read your statement of financial activities?

Please see our charity commission page, here.

We also publish a separate impact report annually, with an update on the work we are doing to promote global press freedom and access to liberal journalism.

Do you have a safeguarding policy?

Yes, you can read it here. We believe safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility and that the safety and welfare of those with whom we work is paramount in all circumstances. Our safeguarding policy sets out The Guardian Foundation’s procedures and commitments to safeguarding children, adults at risk and everyone with whom we come into contact with through our work.

Where are you registered?

The Guardian Foundation is a UK registered charity, but we work all over the world. We are not currently registered in other locations, such as the US or Canada.

Our connection to the Guardian

Will a donation to The Guardian Foundation support the Guardian’s independent journalism?

No, your donation will support The Guardian Foundation's charitable work. This includes specialist news and media literacy workshops for young people, help us promote diversity in the media and support independent media to strengthen their work. If you wish to support the Guardian’s journalism, please visit theguardian.com.

What’s your connection to the Guardian?

The Guardian Foundation is an independent charity created by the Scott Trust, the owners of the Guardian, and has its own board of trustees. Our unique connection with the Guardian helps inform our work through real newsroom experience, and many Guardian staff provide additional expertise and volunteer to support our work. The Guardian Foundation also benefits from the Guardian’s in-kind support, including the use of the Guardian’s offices and technology, whilst maintaining its own team of staff with the skills for their roles. For instance, our work in schools is led by education experts and qualified teachers.

How can my donation make a difference and shouldn't the Guardian fund everything?

The Scott Trust makes an important financial contribution to The Guardian Foundation and we’re very grateful for their ongoing support. However, like any company or donor, there is a limit to the amount that they can provide. Therefore, our level of impact each year depends on external support - your donation will make a demonstrable difference to the young people we can reach and our level of support for independent media. For special contributions, we’re happy to work with donors on aligning their funding with specific areas of our programme objectives, so please do get in touch to discuss how we can work together.

Do you promote the Guardian in your work?

No. Our news and media literacy programmes use a wide range of publications as examples of trusted sources, including the Guardian, and journalists from various media outlets volunteer on our programmes. We’re proud that our many Scott Trust Bursary recipients have gone on to have great careers for numerous media organisations, demonstrating our legacy of supporting the sector.

Gift Aid and tax efficient giving

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is one of the simplest and most effective ways of giving to charity if you are a UK taxpayer. It is a scheme introduced by HM Revenue & Customs, which allows us to reclaim the basic rate tax you pay.

Gift Aid is a great way for you to help The Guardian Foundation maximise the value of its donations. It means that every £1 you donate could be worth an extra 25 pence to us.

Gift aid can only be applied to donations from individuals, not businesses.

How do I make sure my donation includes gift aid?

You must give a declaration if you want to apply Gift Aid to your donation.

If you donate through our CAF donation platform, you will simply be asked to check a box to confirm you would like gift aid to be applied.

If you are donating via cheque or bank transfer, please fill out and email or post this form provided by HMRC.

I am not a UK tax payer. Can I make a tax efficient donation from another country?

We are only registered as a charity in the UK, which means we can only offer tax-efficient donation options to UK taxpayers. Unfortunately, if you are not a UK taxpayer your donation will not be eligible for tax benefits like Gift Aid or equivalent tax deductions. However, we are incredibly grateful for your support, and your contribution will still make a meaningful difference!
