Supporting independent media to hold power to account

How you can make a difference

Global press freedom has fallen to a record low.
Around the world, independent journalism is under pressure from repressive regimes and business models struggling to keep up with technological change. This is leaving a vacuum in which disinformation and propaganda thrives.

We make sure this doesn’t happen. By tapping into the Guardian’s expertise and working with local partners, we offer sustained support for media organisations. Our approach goes beyond newsroom training. We mobilise expertise from across the Guardian and wider media industry, spanning editorial, technology and business teams, to co-create practical, long-term solutions.

Your support helps us safeguard the future of independent media where it’s needed most.

What we do

  • Mentoring, skills development and global support networks

  • Visits to the Guardian newsroom and peer networking opportunities

  • Developing local trainers, embedding journalism education locally

  • Mini-grants for kick-starting new ideas and products

  • Business support that draws from the Guardian's world leading expertise, ranging from revenue strategies to AI utilisation to newsroom leadership.

  • We're making a difference

To date, we've supported over 400 journalists from 14 countries, including Turkey, Ukraine, India and Syrian journalists in exile.
  • 176 journalism projects have been developed, including podcasts, articles and newsletters, reaching over 1 million people

  • 75% of these projects have continued into the long term, compared to an average start-up success rate of 10%

  • We've expanded our reach by supporting trainers in their localities, with 90% of participants going on to train others

  • They understood our goals and gave us practical advice that we could act on quickly. One tip resulted in over 150% increase in our acquisitions that week. Zakhar Protsiuk, Chief Operating Officer, The Kyiv Independent

    Rising to the challenge

    £6,000
could fund one international (non-UK) independent media organisation to attend our knowledge exchange week in London.
    £45,000
could support 10 journalists to develop a new journalism product, like a podcast, covering untold stories in the region.
    £270,000
could allow us to support independent media in a new country with mentorship, practical support for projects, training of trainers and a knowledge exchange week in London.
