Our innovative WhatsApp chatbot has been named a finalist in the prestigious WAN-IFRA Digital Media Awards. This recognition highlights our commitment to building a generation of media literate citizens, equipping people with the skills, tools and support to navigate today’s complex information landscape.
The project is a finalist in the 'best in countering disinformation' category, which "rewards outstanding work that strengthens public understanding and trust by confronting disinformation with transparency, responsiveness, and innovation."
About the project
The Guardian Foundation collaborated on the creation of a WhatsApp chatbot designed to help people identify disinformation. In partnership with Maldita.es, CORRECTIV, and deCheckers, we drew on our educational expertise to develop content for a series of activities within the popular messaging service app.
Now, adults of all ages who speak German, Spanish, or Flemish can access short courses, fun quizzes and tips via WhatsApp on misinformation, critical thinking, fact-checking, and media literacy.
This work is in addition to the Foundation's existing news and media literacy work in schools, communities and in our education centre located in the Guardian's newsroom.
