Resources for schools

NewsWise lesson plans, activities and teacher guidance for 7- to 11-year-olds

NewsWise offers lesson plans, activities and teacher guidance to engage pupils aged 7-11 with news and develop crucial critical literacy skills. Each lesson incorporates authentic skills from the newsroom, with pupils progressing through Journalist Training School as they complete the unit of work, culminating in them producing their own news report at the end of the project.

NewsWise lesson plans and resources are open to all schools, everywhere, for free. Complete a short registration form to access the resources.
New resource highlight!
Fact and opinion
There are horses on the loose on the streets of London!

But what are the facts of the story and what is just a rumour, speculation, or someone's opinion about what has happened?

In our updated lesson, pupils use language clues to distinguish between fact and opinion on social media, and consider why it's important to know the difference.

Developing a safe climate for learning about the news
How to ensure you are supporting pupils to engage with the news safely.
Some news stories can be upsetting or worrying for children, especially when there is also a lot of misinformation about the topic. Discover our guidance on discussing news safely in the classroom.

Finished NewsWise?

Before your class of brand new journalists can officially graduate from Journalist Training School, we need to put their skills to the test! Our short, online quiz checks their fake news detective skills and asks some more questions about what they've learned along the way.

Click the button below or share this link with your class: bit.ly/pupilpostnw2425
Complete the teacher survey too and you'll get a link to the quiz answers, so you can share these with your class. (We recommend completing the teacher survey shortly before, while, or soon after pupils complete their quiz, so you can share the answers with them in the same lesson.)

We'd love to see your pupils' finished news reports! Email them to us at newswise@theguardianfoundation.org - we might be able to publish them on our website!
