Behind the Headlines

Virtual opinion writing

Ages: 15-18
Minimum number of students: 15
Maximum number of students: 35
Delivery method: virtual 60 minutes

Students will discover the style, pace and structure of opinion and comment articles and go on to devise, research and plan a short opinion piece inspired by a current news story.

We will provide pre and post workshop resources including a comment page template. Students will go on to complete their piece after the virtual session.

This session is designed for 16-18 year olds.
  • 89% of students said the workshop gave them a good or very good understanding of the style and structure of an opinion piece.

  • 100% of teachers said the workshop has given them ideas and resources to complement their teaching.

  • Technical requirements and registration

Sessions will take place securely using Zoom. Due to limitations in virtual delivery, we are only able to connect with one classroom at a time and cannot connect with students’ personal devices. After the sessions students will need computer access to produce their article and complete their feature or comment page.

Please note we have limited availability and will give priority to state schools with above average free school meal rates.

Please ensure you provide full availability (days and times) for the class you wish to book for in the comment box to help us schedule bookings - without this we may be unable to offer a workshop to your organisation.
I loved how thorough the explanations were and the examples gave clear imagery of the content.

My students were really engaged and enjoyed learning about writing opinion articles as well as a bit about the newspaper industry. They enjoyed having the opportunity to express their own opinions in an environment where they felt that their opinions were valued and mattered.
    A great workshop!
